German Chancellor Angela Merkel has suffered a pelvic injury while cross country skiing in Switzerland. She is to rest and remain on the political sidelines for a few weeks as a result.
During a period of three weeks, Merkel will «concentrate on a few appointments in the Federal Chancellery and in Berlin» while her injury heals, according to government spokesperson Steffen Seibert. She will need to «rest a lot» in order to heal properly, Seibert added.
While skiing in the south-eastern Swiss Engadin region, the 59-year-old Merkel suffered a fall which she first believed to be a bruise. However, an examination by a physician revealed a pelvic fracture.
In addition to a few public events in the German capital, Merkel’s upcoming appointments outside of Berlin and have been cancelled – including a visit to Poland and a the inaugural visit from the Prime Minister of Luxembourg.
However, the German Chancellor is still «able to work and communicate» and will lead Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.
