Dear Auntie SAM: I had the best night I’ve ever had in Basel when I went out with you that one year during Art Basel. My girlfriends & I got babysitters &, this year, we are definitely going out again! Where should we go?!
Many lifetimes ago, when my friends & I entered a scene, worlds collided: people, parties, dance floors, and clubs became brighter, cooler, hotter, fun. Night after night, we molded mundane events into bacchanal feasts and led friends & strangers alike down & through twisting twisted rabbit holes until gentle fairies ushering in the late morning dew called us home. It was sublime. But, then, like a supernova, it ended.
Drug overdoses. Suicides. AIDS. Families. One by one, we fell like stardust. Until „we“ were no more.
One could be sad about that. But, the way I see it: it was disposable brilliance. And I got to be a part of it.
Maybe the most beautiful – most worthwhile – things in life cannot last forever.
But your memory of it can. In your mind, the moments of one magical evening can repeat for eternity. And the effect that night can have on you can change everything.
We truly are the sum of our experiences.
So this week – this divine week when club kids old & new rend and transform Basel into our young-at-heart playground – let’s do things a little differently.
Let’s not just buy the ticket, put on our very serious grown-up faces, & trudge with the crowds in room after room through staid convention halls.
