Sometimes all you really need is a girl with a heart of gold & a few bread crumbs.

Dear Auntie SAM: A friend fell in love with a girl from USA. Would u recommend anybody going there? For love for example? He wants to move there for her.

In my favorite fairytale, a little boy & girl fall in love in a rose garden that connects their homes.

One day, two splinters of glass from a mirror crafted by devils pierce his heart & eye. His heart turns to ice. And his vision now only sees evil & ugliness where, before, beauty had been.

He abandons his home & his love to follow a Snow Queen, who kisses his cold heart even colder & promises life eternal as an ice sculpture in her garden.

Unless he can solve one puzzle.

It’s a rather long fairytale. Quite honestly, when reading it as a child, it felt more like a book. But re-read it, I did, several times every year.

Because the hero of the story is the girl.

Everyone else around her writes off the boy as dead. But she tests & challenges that theory in ways only Fairytale Heroines can. Across rivers. Through forest & tundra. With the help of animals & nature. Despite false promises, disappointments, dead ends. Against witches & riches & thieves.

She loses everything during her journey. Her shoes. Her freedom. Her name. But nothing essential.

So she reaches the boy. She kisses him. And their tears fall, solving the puzzle. He’s freed.

And, I suppose, as all fairytales imply, we’re meant to believe they lived happily ever after.

But, even as a child, that didn’t cross my mind. Because, Sweet Darling …

Once you’ve overcome darkness. Once you know what you can do. Once you finally comprehend love’s power. Once you & your tiny, unprotected toes conquer demon-protected ice gardens, kiss away evil, love without regret, & bring your childhood sweetheart back from nearly dead …

Do you really think „Once upon a time“ would be enough ?

If your friend wants to see the States, then he should go to the States. If he wants to follow this girl, then maybe he should follow this girl.

Where we are & who stays in our life are not so much matters of choice, by my way of thinking.

And, besides, I’m sure the States & this girl have pleasures he’d enjoy.

But, trust your dear Auntie on this: if he … if you choose to do anything for – or heaven help you – against love, then do so accepting one gift: Aphrodite will rend & bend & mold you until your love is like steel itself.

Then, from there, the world’s your oyster.

Suck it up … with relish. Enjoy.
